People trust trams - know they won't (usually) swerve and put them in danger. Another pic from yesterday perhaps shows that. Mal Rowe - who would never dare to sit that close to a bus lane.

Pyramid plates

Now that I have the attention of one TDU list member (Hi Mick!) here's today's story of tram adventure in the GTCOTS. My journey into the city was interrupted by an announcement that mt route 59 tram was to be diverted via North Melbourne. Tram Tracker reported track issues in Flemington Rd near the Royal Childrens Hospital. So, I hopped off the tram and grabbed the first attached pic. There was clearly a problem with dirt in the point mechanism at the crossover an 6027 had split the points. R10 was not available. I think it was dealing with another issue at the corner of Lygon and Elgin Sts. About three hours later later I came back to find that 6085 had been brought in to tow 6027 and was in the final stage of re-railing the tram. Second pic shows the pyramid plate that guided the last axle back on the track being removed. There was a runaway at the Elevador da Glória with 15 fatalities and 18 people injured, 5 of the latter being serious / critical. The Elevador has two cars, one at each end of a cable that passes over a free-running pulley at the top: in theory, the cars balance each other when empty. The cable runs in a slot in the ground. Each car sits on a modification of a Brill 21E-type truck and has two traction motors with a tram-type controller at each end. There are air brakes. The cars are wired in series with each other, via pantographs and four overhead contact wires, so that current arrives at the motors only when both cars have a controller that has taken power.
