A man has died after being struck by a light rail carriage at a stop in Sydney's inner-city.

Emergency services remain on scene after the man, believed to be in his 40s, was hit about 1.15pm at the Surry Hills light rail stop on Devonshire Street.

"On arrival, officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command found a man, believed to be aged in his 40s under the carriage," NSW Police said in a statement.

"The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however he died at the scene."

The man is yet to be identified.

Light rail services are expected to be disrupted throughout the afternoon.

Transport for NSW said L2 and L3 services were not running between Moore Park and Central, and advised passengers to delay travel or take alternative transport.

Emergency services were called to Devonshire Street in Surry Hills about 1.15pm on Thursday following reports the pedestrian in his 40s had been struck.

Paramedics attempted to treat the man however he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

Light rail services are not running between Moore Park and Circular Quay, and passengers have been urged to take alternate forms of transport or delay their travel.

L2 and L3 light rail services are running between Moore Park and Randwick, and between Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford.

Transport for NSW have requested replacement buses between Central and Moore Park, but bus services are not yet running.

A crime scene has been established and NSW Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
